Rahway has its own fence rules, and getting them wrong can mean redoing the work. Here's what the city's code (Chapter 349, Section 349-8) says for residential properties:

• A permit is required for any fence 3 feet or taller. Rahway requires a building permit for fences 3 feet high or more.
• Front yard: 4 feet maximum. Front-yard fences must be picket or split rail and at least 50% open.
• Side and rear yards: 6 feet maximum.
• Chain link goes in back yards only, and it must be vinyl-coated.
• The finished side faces out. The good side of the fence has to face your neighbors and the street, not your yard.
• Near street corners, keep it low. Within 25 feet of an intersection, fences can't be taller than 2½ feet above the curb, so drivers can see.
• Corner lots: a 6-foot solid fence may be allowed along the secondary front yard if it doesn't block the view of traffic and the Zoning Officer approves it.
• Pools need a fence. A permanent fence at least 4 feet high must go all the way around a swimming pool, with locking gates.
