Pool Fence Requirements in Our Area

• At least 4 feet high. New Jersey's construction code calls for a pool barrier at least 4 feet tall, and Rahway, Woodbridge and Carteret say so in their own codes.
• Fully enclosed. The fence must go all the way around the pool.
• Self-closing, self-latching, lockable gates. Carteret requires all three; Rahway and Woodbridge require gates that can be locked.
• Permits. Pool barriers usually need a construction permit. Edison, for example, lists pool barriers in its permit fee schedule.
