Fence Rules Change From Town to Town
New Jersey does not have one fence rule. Each town sets its own limits on permits, height, style and placement, and getting them wrong can mean tearing out a new fence. This guide compares the fence rules in the towns Rahway Fence Company serves most, based on each town's official code.

Rules Almost Every Town Shares
- Finished side out. The good side of the fence faces your neighbor or the street.
- Lower and more open in front. Front-yard fences are usually capped at 4 feet, and many towns require an open style.
- Clear sight lines at corners. Fences near intersections are kept low so drivers can see.
- No dangerous materials. Barbed wire, electric fences and metal spikes are banned in residential areas.
- Pools need a barrier. At least 4 feet high, fully enclosing the pool, with gates that close and latch. See pool fences.
- Call 811 before digging. New Jersey law requires it.

Do I need a permit to install a fence in New Jersey?
It depends on your town. Each New Jersey municipality sets its own fence rules. For example, Rahway requires a permit for fences 3 feet or taller, Clark requires a permit for any fence, Woodbridge and Carteret require zoning permits, and Westfield does not require a construction permit for fences within its height limits.
How tall can a fence be in New Jersey?
Most towns in our area allow up to 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Clark allows up to 6½ feet between neighbors. Always check your town's code.
Which side of the fence faces the neighbor in New Jersey?
In every town in this guide, the finished side must face out, toward the neighbor or the street.
How tall does a pool fence have to be in New Jersey?
At least 4 feet, with gates that close and latch. Several towns add their own pool fence rules.
Do I need to call 811 before installing a fence in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey law requires a call to NJ One Call (811) before digging, so underground utilities can be marked.
