Woodbridge's fence rules are in its Land Use and Development Ordinance (Chapter 150, Section 150-80). Here's what homeowners should know:

• Front yard: 4 feet maximum, open style. Front-yard fences must be open mesh or another open material approved by the Construction Official.
• Side and rear yards: 6 feet maximum.
• Zoning permit: fences need a zoning permit (Section 150-7 lists a $25 fee).
• Corner lots: nothing over 3 feet above the curb within the triangle formed 25 feet back from an intersection. Trees must be trimmed up to 10 feet.
• Finished side faces out toward the adjacent property, and fences must be kept in good condition.
• Chain link must be knuckled at the top. Barbed wire, electric fences and metal spikes are not allowed.
• Pools need a fence at least 4 feet high around any below-ground pool (and pools of 100 square feet or more that sit less than 4 feet above ground), with gates that can be locked.
• Drainage matters. A fence that blocks natural drainage or causes standing water can be ordered removed.
